Artificial Intelligence (AI) has had a long and chequered history. After many false starts since the 1950s, AI is being used in mainstream technology from cars to call centres, and smartphones to IT systems, supported by the exponential growth in data from the Internet of Things (IoT).
Under a range of names — deep learning, cognitive computing, robotics, algorithms, etc. — AI and IoT offer both the threat and the promise of revolutionising all aspects of IT, business and, indeed, society.
This session looks at the practical application of AI and IoT in decision-making support, building on familiar BI and analytics paradigms as well as some emerging tools and techniques in AI. The key distinction between augmentation and automation of human decision making is explored. In particular, the ethical, social and economic implications of widespread adoption of artificial intelligence are laid out, along with some high-level suggestions on how to address them.
