As a large global automotive and industrial supplier, Schaeffler provides high-precision components and systems in engine, transmission, and chassis applications, as well as rolling and plain bearing solutions for many industrial applications.
In order to optimize processes and realize new data-driven business models & customer benefits, SCHAEFFLER integrates data silos and IT systems into a unified enterprise-wide information space. As a key technology enabler, Schaeffler established a Cloud-based Data & Analytics Platform, which serves as a global hub for the integration and harmonization of data across Schaeffler business units and also hosts the central Schaeffler Data Lake.

Signal Processing To The Edge: Worldwide Analysis of Large-Scale Automotive Measurement Data

We will sketch a new edge computing scheme for dealing with exabytes of measurement data collected in the most remote and inhospitable areas of the world. The proposed scheme builds on two pillars. First, it consists of a so-called 'meta-cluster' architecture in which secure micro-data-centers are federated via an ubiquitous cloud backbone. Secondly, our scheme employs a dedicated and patent-pending signal processing software stack which is able to move the transformational specifications from the expert's desk to the globally-distributed computation and storage devices as well as to re-integrate the measurement excerpts back for interactive discovery.

Extended Abstract
'In this session, we will sketch a new edge computing scheme for dealing with exabytes of measurement data collected in the most remote and inhospitable areas of the world.
The proposed scheme builds on two pillars. First, it consists of a so-called 'meta-cluster' architecture in which secure (and to a certain degree: mobile) micro-data-centers are federated via an ubiquitous cloud backbone. In this architecture, each node of the snowflake-like, loosely coupled network represents a big data cluster in itself consisting of tightly interconnected compute and storage devices. Larger clusters are placed in the center of this scheme while smaller, increasingly mobile, but still extensible clusters form the leaves. Each cluster provides its own distributed filesystem and (meta-)database structures and we introduce some notion of filesystem federation and meta-database replication to efficiently manage the complexity.
Secondly, our scheme employs a dedicated and patent-pending signal processing software stack which is able to move the transformational specifications from the expert's desk (e.g., the detection of measurement events such as battery leaking in the context of previous acceleration attempts, and the extraction of particular surrounding channels in such an event's context) to the globally-distributed computation and storage devices as well as to re-integrate the measurement excerpts back for interactive discovery.
For this purpose, T-Systems invented a new transcoding pipeline known as Big Data Signal Processing which is able to interpret, compress, store and transform the inherent measurement time-series in a very declarative, fault-tolerant and at the same time parallel way. This goes as far that even video streams can be treated and tagged in real-time using advanced machine learning algorithms.
The presented edge computing scheme for measurement data is successfully implemented by the ambitious Daimler project 'Big Data for Endurance Testing', a future-proof analysis and reporting platform for endurance testing with 23 sites around the globe that lays a special emphasis on open standards and interoperability such as given by the Hadoop ecosystem. Key to its success is the ability of the Daimler engineers to transparently access and postprocess all the measurement data down to the raw level using their favourite statistical tools. Following the paradigm 'move the algorithm, not the data', engineers are able to analyze the data right after extraction without any delay for data centralization.
