Extended Abstract:
About 3.5 years ago, the Data Quality & Governance Journey was launched under the umbrella of the Data Strategy & Transformation Programme for the Lufthansa Group. The primary objective of this initiative is to establish data as a corporate asset, thereby making data usage more efficient and setting the foundation for a data- and AI-driven company.

Initially, the focus was on developing a robust Data Quality & Governance framework. This involved creating policies, standards, and processes to ensure data integrity, accuracy, and consistency across the complex corporate organisation. By laying down these foundational elements, we aimed to build a strong governance structure that supports reliable data management practices.

Now, the attention has shifted towards data user enablement. This phase is all about making Data Quality & Governance tangible to the end-users. We are implementing the data governance roles along with the data catalog and global glossary to anchor the responsibility for good data quality in a joint environment of business and IT.

Through this journey we have experienced how data governance has grown from a niche topic to a subject everybody is talking about.

Kiomi Soledad Spriestersbach has acquired a vast experience in working with data and building bridges between business and IT dating back to her academic education in business informatics. During her professional carrier she held various positions in different areas within Lufthansa Group, always involving data and issues with data. Thus, her main objectives in driving the efficient and effective use of data became to break down data silos and build trust in data. To have an active role she took over the task to set up a team to drive the definition, setup an implementation of the Data Quality & Governance framework. Since more than three years she has been leading the transformation programme “Data Quality & Governance” providing guidelines and standards for the Lufthansa Group’s companies to be implemented. A special challenge she has to manage is the complex organisational setup requiring particular collaboration and communication skills.
